Gabby's Dollhouse is a fun American TV show for kids aged 2-5. It mixes live-action scenes with cool computer animation. The series was created by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey and first came out on Netflix on January 5, 2021. In the show, a girl named Gabby and her cute cat friends, known as the Gabby Cats, have exciting adventures inside her amazing dollhouse.

What is Gabby's Dollhouse About?

Each episode of Gabby's Dollhouse starts with Gabby playing in her real-life bedroom. She gets a special package delivered to her Meow-Meow Mailbox. This package always holds a tiny surprise that kicks off a new adventure inside her animated dollhouse.

Gabby puts on her magical cat ears headband. Then, she shrinks down to toy size with her stuffed toy Pandy Paws. Pandy Paws comes to life and gives Gabby a big "hug attack"! During their adventures, they often meet CatRat, who likes to pop up in different rooms.

The dollhouse has seven main rooms, all with a cat theme. This is where Gabby and the Gabby Cats have their adventures:

  • The Bathroom: MerCat does science experiments here, often with a "spa" theme.
  • The Bedroom: Pillow Cat tells awesome stories and encourages everyone to use their make believe skills.
  • The Craft Room: Baby Box and her family teach how to make cool DIY projects.
  • The Fairytail Garden: Kitty Fairy takes care of magical plants in this beautiful garden.
  • The Kitchen: Cakey bakes yummy snacks and desserts, all decorated with cats.
  • The Music Room: DJ Catnip teaches how to play different musical instruments.
  • The Playroom: Carlita loves to join in fun physical education games here.

At the end of each episode, there's a "Gabby Cat of the Day" part. One of the Gabby Cats guides viewers in a fun activity like crafting, cooking, or singing. Then, it goes back to live-action Gabby, who says goodbye until next time.

How the Show is Made

Gabby's Dollhouse was created during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was special because it was the first DreamWorks show where the creators worked from New York City instead of Los Angeles. The whole team, including the creators, worked together using videoconferencing, which was also a first for DreamWorks.

The creators, Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey, loved dollhouses, tiny things, and cats. These became the main themes of the show. The idea for the "dollhouse deliveries" came from popular "unboxing" videos, but they changed it so that Gabby "unboxes a story" instead of just a product. At first, cats weren't the main focus, but this changed because of how popular cat videos were online!

During the show's creation, the team learned about "The Growth Mindset." This idea encourages celebrating mistakes and learning from them, which is a big message in the show. The music in Gabby's Dollhouse is also unique. It includes styles like disco and pop, which aren't always found in kids' shows. The creators wanted music that wasn't "too sweet."

The animation for the show was made by several companies, including Technicolor Animation Productions (now Mikros Animation), Dave Enterprises, CGCG, and Gabby Gabby Hey Productions, Ltd. The live-action parts were filmed by One-Take Floyd.
