The Nick Jr. Channel is an American TV channel made just for preschoolers. It's a spin-off from Nickelodeon's popular "Nick Jr." shows that air during the day. This channel is owned by Paramount Global.
The Nick Jr. Channel started on September 28, 2009. It mostly shows cartoons and educational programs for young kids. To help people tell the difference, the channel has been called "the Nick Jr. Channel" since 2018.
This channel took the place of another channel called Noggin. Noggin later became a streaming service in 2015. It offers different shows than the Nick Jr. Channel. Sometimes, the Nick Jr. Channel even aired a special "Noggin Hour" block with shows from the Noggin app.
Both the Nick Jr. Channel and the Nick Jr. block on Nickelodeon are still running. The Nick Jr. block airs on weekdays on Nickelodeon, usually from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET.

The Story of Nick Jr.
How the Nick Jr. Block Started (1988–Today)
Nickelodeon has always shown programs for young children. These shows usually aired on weekday mornings. This was when older kids were at school.
On January 4, 1988, Nickelodeon officially named its preschool block "Nick Junior." A little later, they shortened the name to "Nick Jr."
At first, the block mainly showed cartoons bought from other countries. Eureeka's Castle was the first original show Nickelodeon made for Nick Jr. After Eureeka finished, the Nick Jr. block wasn't given much attention.
But in 1994, Nickelodeon invested a lot of money to make Nick Jr. better. On September 5, 1994, the Nick Jr. block relaunched. It introduced a character named Face as its first host. Also, it stopped having regular commercials between shows.
New original shows like Gullah Gullah Island and Allegra's Window premiered. These shows helped the block get many more viewers. From then on, Nickelodeon started making more of its own shows for Nick Jr. They slowly stopped showing foreign cartoons. Shows like Blue's Clues and Dora the Explorer became huge hits. They were popular on both the Nick Jr. block and Nickelodeon itself.
Before becoming its own channel, Nick Jr. shows also appeared on other networks. These included "Nick Jr. on CBS" from 2000 to 2006. They also aired on Noggin from 2003 to 2009.
The Nick Jr. Channel Begins (2009–Today)
On February 23, 2009, Nickelodeon announced that Noggin would be replaced. The new channel would be named after the Nick Jr. block. This was to make all their channels look more alike.
The Nick Jr. Channel officially started on September 28, 2009. It had a new logo. The logo kept the orange "Nick" and blue "Jr." colors. These colors represent an adult and a child.
Until 2012, the Nick Jr. Channel still looked a lot like Noggin. It even used Noggin's mascots, Moose and Zee. It also didn't show regular commercials.
On March 1, 2012, the Nick Jr. Channel got a new look. The Moose and Zee mascots were removed. The channel's slogan changed to "The Smart Place To Play." This slogan was also used for the Nick Jr. block on Nickelodeon.
At this time, characters from Nick Jr. shows started hosting the programs. The channel also began showing short promotions. By October 1, 2012, it started airing limited commercials. These were like sponsorships from companies.
On May 21, 2018, the channel updated its look again. It also started calling itself "the Nick Jr. Channel" more often. This helped avoid confusion with the Nick Jr. block on Nickelodeon.
Noggin Hour Block (2021–2022)
From May 2021 to March 2022, the Nick Jr. Channel had a special block. It was called "Noggin Hour" and aired every Friday. This block showed programs from the Noggin app. Some shows included Kinderwood and Noggin Knows. During commercials, special Noggin messages played.
