Behind the Scenes: Making Gullah Gullah Island
How the Show Began
The idea for Gullah Gullah Island came from Ron Daise's book, Reminiscences of Sea Island Heritage, published in 1987. Ron and Natalie Daise created a show called Sea Island Montage, which shared stories from their culture. After one of their performances, they met a producer from Nickelodeon.
The show's creator, Maria Perez-Brown, wanted to make a multicultural program about a "magical island." She was inspired by the Daises and decided to use the Sea Islands and the unique Gullah culture as the setting. Gullah Gullah Island was special because it was the first show of its kind to feature an African-American family living in a community with deep cultural roots. Ron Daise wanted to make sure the show presented the Gullah culture in a positive and respectful way.
Show Format and Filming Locations
Gullah Gullah Island was a live-action show, meaning it featured real people, not cartoons. It was a sing-along program that encouraged kids to think for themselves and make good choices.
Ron and Natalie Daise played the Alston family, who lived on the fictional Gullah Gullah Island. Their real children, Simeon and Sara, also appeared in the show. A friendly full-body puppet frog named Binyah Binyah was also a main character.
The show was filmed at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Universal Studios Florida. Some outdoor scenes were filmed in beautiful locations like Beaufort and Fripp Island, South Carolina. One episode even showed the family visiting the City Market in Charleston, South Carolina. Each episode told a complete story, filled with singing, dancing, and lessons about important life skills.
Where to Watch Gullah Gullah Island
The show aired for five seasons, with 72 episodes in total. After it finished airing new episodes in 2000, reruns were shown on Nickelodeon and later on the Noggin channel.
Home Videos and Streaming
Many special home videos of Gullah Gullah Island were released on VHS, including titles like Binyah's Surprise and Dance Along with the Daise Family. Later, the seasons became available on DVD through Amazon.com's "Manufacture On Demand" program.
Good news for fans! In January 2021, the entire series was added to Paramount+, a streaming service. This means you can watch all the episodes, including one special episode called "Shake, Rattle and Roll" that was not widely seen before. Nickelodeon also created children's books, music cassettes, and even plush toys of Binyah Binyah Polliwog.
Binyah Binyah! Miniseries
In 1997, a special miniseries called "Binyah Binyah!" was created. It had five episodes that aired in February 1998. This miniseries focused on Binyah Binyah the frog as he explored places outside of Gullah Gullah Island. It also introduced some new puppet friends. Ron and Natalie Daise were part of this miniseries too. It had its own theme song and was a fun adventure for Binyah Binyah!
