Casey Key is a cool, narrow island right off the coast of Southwest Florida. It's like a natural barrier, protecting the mainland from the ocean waves. You can find it just south of another well-known island called Siesta Key. Casey Key is part of a bigger area that includes cities like North Port, Sarasota, and Bradenton. This whole area is known as the Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History of Casey Key

The name "Casey Key" has a bit of a funny story! It was actually named by mistake. Back in 1851, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey made a map. On this map, they accidentally named the island "Casey Key."

How the Name Mistake Happened

The island was supposed to be named after Captain John Charles Casey. But at the time the map was made, Captain Casey and his army were actually living on a different island. That other island was called "Casey's Key" and it was located south of the island we now call Casey Key. So, the mapmakers got the names mixed up!
