Cashtown-McKnightstown was a special kind of community in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. It was called a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it was an area that the U.S. Census Bureau defined for gathering population information.

In 2010, Cashtown-McKnightstown was split into two separate places. These are now known as Cashtown and McKnightstown.

The area covered by this CDP was about 2.4 square miles (6.2 square kilometers). All of this land was solid ground, with no large bodies of water.

History of Cashtown and the Civil War

The area around Cashtown has an important place in American history. This is especially true for events during the American Civil War.

In 1863, a major event happened here. General Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, marched through Cashtown. His army was on its way to the famous Battle of Gettysburg. This battle was one of the most important of the Civil War.

Some generals even set up their headquarters at the historic Cashtown Inn during the battle. This old inn saw a lot of history unfold.

After the Battle of Gettysburg, General Lee's army had to retreat. They passed through Cashtown again in the early morning of July 4, 1863. It was raining heavily as they made their way back to Virginia.

According to the 2000 census, there were 753 people living in Cashtown-McKnightstown. These people lived in 289 households, and 223 of these were families.

The population was spread out across different age groups. About 24% of the people were under 18 years old. Around 14% were 65 years or older. The average age of people living there was 40 years old.

Most households were made up of married couples living together. There were also some single-parent households and individuals living alone.
