Casimiro Sainz y Saiz (born December 4, 1853 – died August 19, 1898) was a Spanish painter. He was well-known for his beautiful landscape paintings and portraits, especially those showing people inside rooms.

About Casimiro Sainz

Casimiro Sainz was born in Matamorosa, a town in Campoo de Enmedio, Spain. His father was a veterinarian, and his uncle was a famous doctor named Luis de Hoyos Sainz. Casimiro was the youngest of ten children. Sadly, his mother passed away from cholera when he was less than a year old.

When he was thirteen, Casimiro went to Madrid to work in his brother-in-law's grocery store. There, he started taking drawing lessons. However, he had a problem with his left leg that made it hard for him to do heavy work. He had to return home. Doctors later found a tumor in his left hip. This tumor could not be removed at the time.

At seventeen, Casimiro received a special scholarship from the "Diputación de Santander," which helped him go back to Madrid. He joined the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, a famous art school. There, he learned from great teachers like Vicente Palmaroli and Carlos de Haes. Casimiro loved to paint outdoors, often in a very excited and creative way. This style of painting is called en plein air.

Casimiro often struggled with his health because of his tumor. This also made him feel emotional at times. A businessman named Pedro Bosch Labrus took advantage of this. He would buy Casimiro's paintings for a low price and then sell them to rich people for much more. Casimiro knew this was happening, but he needed the money to live.

In 1881, Casimiro won an award at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, a big art show. But his health was still not good. His friends helped him go back to Matamorosa. There, he felt much better and painted some of his best works.

He returned to Madrid in 1885. At first, he lived with his sister Luisa. Later, he moved to Malasaña, a neighborhood where many artists lived. During this time, his health would get better and then worse again. His friends always took care of him. Even with these challenges, he showed his art in several exhibitions and received good reviews from art critics.

As his health continued to cause him pain, Casimiro sometimes had confused thoughts. It became harder for him to take care of himself. For two years, he stayed with his friend, the painter Eduardo Pelayo. In 1890, Pelayo and another friend decided it was best for Casimiro to go to a special hospital for people needing mental health care. It was run by Dr. José María Esquerdo in Carabanchel. The government helped pay for his long stay there. In the same year, he won another award at the National Exhibition.

Casimiro Sainz passed away in Madrid at the age of 44. He died from an infection in his left leg. He was buried in the local cemetery. In 1922, his remains were moved to Reinosa. His grave now has a sculpture made by Victorio Macho. There are streets named after him in the cities of Santander and Torrelavega.
