Who Were the Castellani?
The Castellani were one of the many groups of people who lived in the Iberian Peninsula before the powerful Roman Empire took over. They are known as "Pre-Roman" because they were there before the Romans.
Where Did We Learn About Them?
We know about the Castellani because an ancient Greek scholar named Claudius Ptolemy wrote about them. He included them in his famous book called Geographia. This book was like an ancient map and guide to the world as people knew it back then. Ptolemy's book, specifically in chapter 5 of book 2, lists the Castellani and some of their towns.
Important Towns of the Castellani
The Castellani lived in several towns. Some of their main settlements that Ptolemy mentioned were:
- Sebendunum, which is now the town of Besalú
- Beseda, which is believed to be Sant Joan de les Abadesses
- Egosa
- Basi
These towns were important centers for the Castellani people, where they lived, traded, and built their communities.
