Where is Castillo de Alba?

This town is found in the Alba Comarca area. This is a region in the northwest of the city of Zamora. Castillo de Alba sits on the side of a hill. A historic castle and the town's church are also on this hillside. The Aliste River flows nearby. The town is about 745 meters (2,444 feet) above sea level.

What is the History of Castillo de Alba?

Ancient Beginnings

The fortress that gives the town its name has a very old history. It started as a fort built before the Romans arrived. Later, during Roman times, people continued to live there.

Medieval Times and the Knights Templar

During the Reconquista, which was a long period when Christian kingdoms took back land from Muslim rule in Spain, this area came under the control of the Kingdom of León. The castle you see today was first ordered to be built by King Ferdinand II of León. Later, King Alfonso IX of León and the Knights Templar made it even stronger.

In 1143, Portugal became independent from the Kingdom of León. Because of this, the castle and the town became important. Both León and Portugal fought to control this border area.

In 1220, King Alfonso IX of León gave Castillo de Alba to the Knights Templar. The Knights Templar were a powerful group of warrior monks. For the next two centuries, this region was known as the Templar of Alba.

Modern Age Changes

During the Modern Age, Castillo de Alba became part of Carbajales de Alba. This area is still in the province of Zamora.

In 1833, Spain changed how its areas were divided. Castillo de Alba stayed in Zamora, within the Region of León. In 1834, it became part of the Judicial District of Alcañices. This meant it was part of that area for legal matters.

Later, in 1850, the old town government of Castillo de Alba joined the municipality of Losacino. In 1983, the status of Alcañices changed. Castillo de Alba then became part of the Judicial District of Zamora.
