Castle Law is a hill located southwest of Fairmilehead. You can find it in the Pentland Hills in Midlothian, Scotland.

This hill is most famous for an ancient Iron Age hill fort built on its slopes.

Exploring Castle Law Hill Fort

The Castle Law Hill Fort is an old fortress from the Iron Age. This was a time in history when people started using iron tools.

What the Fort Looked Like

When people lived here, the fort had strong defenses. These included three large earth walls, called ramparts. There were also deep ditches and tall wooden fences, known as palisades.

Inside the fort, there was a special underground passage. This passage is called a Souterrain. People used it to store important things like food, such as grains and vegetables.

Digging Up the Past

A famous archaeologist named V. Gordon Childe led excavations at Castle Law. He and his team dug here in 1932 and 1933. Their work focused on the large earth walls (ramparts). They discovered that these walls were built with a mix of clay and wood. The outside of the walls was covered with stone.

Amazing Views from the Fort

The fort is in a great spot with wide views. From Castle Law, you can see across the Firth of Forth. You can also see the area known as Lothian.

From here, you might even spot other important Iron Age sites. These include Traprain Law and North Berwick Law. These places were also major centers of power long ago.

Visiting Castle Law Today

Today, Historic Environment Scotland looks after the fort. It is protected as a scheduled monument. This means it's an important historical site.

You can visit the site for free! However, remember that sheep graze in the area. If you bring a dog, please keep it on a leash.

The fort is also close to an army firing range. Always be careful and do not go into areas marked with red flags.
