The History of the Town's Name

Original Name and Settlement
The town was first named Castrillo Motajudíos in 1035. This name means "Jew hill camp." It was given this name because Jewish people settled there. They were escaping from a violent attack in a nearby area.
Name Change During Persecution
In 1627, the town's name was changed to Castrillo Matajudíos. This new name meant "Jew-killer camp." This change happened during a time when people who were not Christians faced difficult times in Spain. Jewish people had already been forced to leave Spain in 1492. This was during a period known as the Spanish Inquisition, when people's religious beliefs were strictly controlled.
Changing the Name Back
In June 2015, the name was changed back to Castrillo Mota de Judíos. The mayor, Lorenzo Rodríguez, led a campaign to make this happen. The people living in the village voted on the change in May 2014. Most people wanted the original name back.
Remembering Jewish History
After the name change, there were some challenges. However, in 2022, the town opened a special place. It is a Sephardic Jewish memorial center. This center helps to honor and remember the town's long history with its Jewish community.
