Catawba (say "cuh-TAW-buh") is a small community in York County, South Carolina, United States. It is located southeast of the city of Rock Hill. It is called an "unincorporated community" because it does not have its own local government like a city or town.
This area was once known as Catawba Ridge. However, that name is not used much anymore. Only some older members of the Catawba Indian Reservation still use it.

Exploring Catawba's Location
Catawba is found in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. The Piedmont is an area of rolling hills and foothills at the base of mountains.
You might notice red clay in some parts of Catawba. This red clay is a sign of how the land was used long ago. Poor farming methods caused the rich topsoil to wash away. Before this happened, the Piedmont region was famous for its excellent farms.
As of 2020, about 1,301 people live in Catawba.

A Look at Catawba's Past
Early Inhabitants: The Catawba Native Americans
The Catawba Native Americans lived along the Catawba River over 6,000 years ago. They were the first people to call this land home.
Coming of the Settlers
Around 1670, new settlers started to arrive in the Piedmont region. The Catawba Natives were known for being peaceful and friendly. They built good relationships with these new settlers.
However, with the settlers came new things, including diseases. In 1759, a serious smallpox outbreak occurred. This disease greatly reduced the Catawba Native American population. Their numbers dropped to less than 1,000 people.
Modern Industry in Catawba
In 1959, a large paper mill was built in Catawba. This mill was later bought by Kraft Group in 2019.
The Catawba Indian Reservation
The Catawba Indian Reservation is a special area of land. It covers 600 acres and is located right in the Catawba community. The Catawba People bought this land in 1850.
This reservation is very important because it is the only Native American reservation in South Carolina that is officially recognized by the United States government.
Life on the Reservation
As of 2011, there are about 2,800 members of the Catawba Indian Nation living on the reservation. The reservation offers many helpful programs for its members, such as:
- Childcare services
- A housing program
- Health clinics
- Transportation services
- A program for senior citizens
- A Head Start program for young children
Everyone is welcome to visit the Catawba Indian Reservation. However, visitors must understand and follow the rules of the Catawba Indian Nation while on their land.
