Catharine Elizabeth Edwards (born March 4, 1982) is an American attorney. She is known for her work in law and her family's involvement in politics. Cate Edwards is the daughter of former United States Senator John Edwards and Elizabeth Edwards.

Early Life and Education

Cate Edwards was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her parents were both lawyers there. She grew up and went to public schools in Wake County. She attended Aldert Root Elementary School, Daniels Middle School, and Needham B. Broughton High School. She was a top student and graduated at the very top of her high school class.

During high school, Cate was very active in sports. She played soccer, basketball, and softball. In her senior year, she was named All-Conference and the Most Valuable Player for her sports teams. She has several siblings: Wade (who passed away in 1996), Emma Claire (born in 1998), and Jack (born in 2000).

After high school, Edwards attended Princeton University. She studied political economics and graduated with special honors. While at Princeton, she was part of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She also worked as an intern for the Council on Foreign Relations, which is a group that studies international policy.

In 2004, Cate Edwards joined her father on his campaign trail. She helped him campaign when he was trying to become the Democratic candidate for president. After the presidential election, she moved to New York City. There, she worked as an editorial assistant for Vanity Fair magazine.

While in New York, Cate and a co-worker created an online tool called UrbanistaOnline. This tool was designed to help young people who were new to New York City settle in. In 2004, she also became a member of the board of directors for Generation Engage. This group helps young people get involved in voting. She was also an active supporter during her father's 2008 presidential campaign. In 2012, she visited Winthrop University to talk to students. She spoke about how important it is to vote and to be active in democracy.

Edwards began studying at Harvard Law School in the fall of 2006. After her first year, she worked as an intern for Nina Totenberg at NPR, a public radio station. In 2007, she joined the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. This group helps people who cannot afford legal help. She graduated from Harvard Law in 2009.

After law school, she moved to Washington, D.C.. She worked as a judicial law clerk for Judge Leonie M. Brinkema. This was at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Later, she joined a civil rights law firm in Washington, D.C. In May 2011, after her mother Elizabeth passed away, Cate took a break from law. She started a foundation to honor her mother. She returned to practicing law in mid-2012. She became a partner at Edwards Kirby, a law firm with her father. In 2021, she started her own law firm called Edwards Beightol with Kristen Beightol.

Personal Life

Cate Edwards married her longtime boyfriend, Trevor Upham, in October 2011. Trevor Upham is a heart surgeon. They have three children together.
