Christ the King Cathedral is a special church in Lubbock, Texas, in the United States. It is a cathedral for the Roman Catholic Church. A cathedral is the main church for a bishop. It is where the bishop has his official seat.
This building started as a school in 1958. It became a church parish on January 1, 1961. The church building itself was finished in 1961. When it was first built, the area around it was mostly cotton fields. Today, the church is surrounded by the city of Lubbock.
Becoming a Cathedral
On June 17, 1984, something very important happened. Pope John Paul II chose this church to be the main church for a new area. This new area is called the Diocese of Lubbock. A diocese is like a region or district for the church.
The Pope appointed the first bishop for this new diocese. His name was Bishop Michael J. Sheehan. This made Christ the King Church a cathedral. As of 2007, Bishop Robert Coerver is the main bishop for this cathedral.
The School at Christ the King
The school connected to Christ the King Cathedral has grown a lot. It started with just students in 1st to 3rd grade. Now, the school serves students from pre-kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. This means it helps many young people learn and grow.
