Its History and Growth
The story of Christ the King Cathedral began in 1958. That year, a school was built. On January 1, 1961, it officially became a parish. A parish is a local church community. The church building itself was finished in 1968.
When the church was first built, it was surrounded by cotton fields. Now, the city of Lubbock has grown all around it.
Becoming a Cathedral
A big change happened on June 17, 1984. Pope John Paul II made it the main church for a new area. This new area was called the Diocese of Lubbock. This meant Christ the King Church became Christ the King Cathedral. Bishop Michael J. Sheehan was the first bishop for this new diocese.
As of 2007, Bishop Robert Coerver has been the main bishop. He leads the diocese.
The School at the Cathedral
The school at Christ the King started small. It only had students from 1st to 3rd grade. Over the years, the school has grown a lot. Today, it serves students from pre-kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.
