The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (which is Sainte-Trinité in French) is a very important church in Quebec City, Canada. It is the main church for the Anglican Diocese of Quebec. This beautiful building is located on the west side of Place d'Armes. It serves two local church groups: the Parish of Quebec and la Paroisse de Tous les Saints. The church was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1989. This means it is a very important historical place for the whole country.

History of the Cathedral

The Anglican Diocese of Quebec was started in 1793. Its first bishop, Dr. Jacob Mountain, quickly decided that a new main church, a cathedral, was needed. The building was designed by two military officers, William Robe and William Hall.

Construction of the cathedral took place between 1800 and 1804. It was officially opened and blessed on August 28, 1804. This made it the very first Anglican cathedral built outside of Great Britain. From 1859 to 1860, William Carter was the church's organist. He put on a huge music event in April 1859. It was the biggest Handel Festival ever held in Canada at that time.

Design and Features

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity was built in a style called Palladian. This is a type of neoclassic architecture. The church's design was inspired by famous churches in London, England. These include the St Martin-in-the-Fields Church and the Marylebone Chapel.

King George III of Great Britain paid for the building of the cathedral. He also gave the church special gifts. These gifts included a large Bible, silver items for communion, and big prayer books.

The Bells

The church's bell-tower holds eight bells. These bells were made by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1830. They are the oldest set of change-ringing bells in all of Canada. Change-ringing is a special way of ringing bells in a changing pattern.

In 2006, the bells were taken down because they were getting old. They were sent back to Whitechapel in London to be fixed and re-tuned. The bells were then put back into the tower in April 2007.

Important People Buried Here

Some important people are buried at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.

  • Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond (1764–1819)
  • Jacob Mountain (1749–1825), who was the first Anglican bishop in Canada. He was very important in getting the cathedral built.
