Caubvick facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Caubvick was an amazing Inuk woman from Labrador, a region in eastern Canada. She lived around the year 1773. Caubvick is especially remembered because the tallest mountain in Labrador, and even east of the Rocky Mountains, is named after her: Mount Caubvick. Her name comes from the Inuktitut word kapvik, which means "wolverine."

A Special Trip to England

In 1773, a trader named George Cartwright invited Caubvick and her husband, along with another Inuk couple, Attuiock and Tooklavina, to travel with him. They went on a long journey all the way to England!

Meeting Important People

While in England, Caubvick and the others met some very important people. They even met the King of England! They also met members of the Royal Society, which is a famous group of scientists, and a writer named James Boswell. It must have been an incredible and new experience for them.

Facing a Challenge

Sadly, during their time in England, the Inuit group became very sick with a serious illness called smallpox. This disease was very dangerous back then. Caubvick was the only one of the group who survived the illness.

Returning Home

After recovering, Caubvick bravely made the long journey back to her home in Labrador. She was the only one from her group to return. Unfortunately, because she had been sick, she unknowingly carried the illness back with her. This led to many of her own people also getting sick. Caubvick's story is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples during early encounters with Europeans.
