Watercourse River Devon, Clackmannanshire

Cauldron Linn, also known as Caldron Linn, is a fantastic waterfall in Scotland. It's located on the River Devon, right on the border between Clackmannanshire and Perth and Kinross. This natural wonder is famous for its unique rock formations and powerful water flow.

Discovering Cauldron Linn

Cauldron Linn is about a mile (1.6 km) downstream from Rumbling Bridge. You can reach it by walking through fields near Powmill. Be careful, though, as the path down to the waterfall is quite steep and can be slippery!

The Amazing Waterfalls

The Cauldron Linn actually has two main waterfalls, separated by about 28 yards (25 meters). The upper waterfall is about 34 feet (10 meters) high. The water here flows over rocks, creating a beautiful scene.

Between these two falls, the river has carved out three round holes in the rock. These look just like giant cooking pots or "cauldrons"!

  • In the first cauldron, the water is always bubbling, as if it's boiling.
  • The second one is covered in constant foam.
  • The third cauldron is the biggest, measuring about 22 feet (6.7 meters) across. Here, the water looks calm, like it's cooling down.

These cauldrons are connected by openings in the rock, not by water spilling over the top. Over many years, the force of the water has worn away the rock to create these passages.

The Grand Finale

The lowest cauldron sends its water into the final, biggest waterfall. It rushes through an opening in the rock that looks like a large door or window. From there, the river plunges in a powerful torrent over a huge cliff into a deep, beautiful valley.

The sound of this waterfall is incredibly loud, and you can feel the power of the water. The main rock face is about 88 feet (27 meters) high, and the water falls about 44 feet (13 meters).

Best Views and Rainbows

For the best view of this magnificent scene, go to the bottom of the main waterfall. It looks like a giant fountain bursting from the solid rock! The perfect time to visit is between 1 PM and 2 PM, when the sun shines directly on the falls.

A mist constantly rises from the pool below the waterfall. When the sun hits this mist, you can see all the colors of the rainbow! These colors dance and change as the air moves, creating a truly magical sight.

Interesting Stories

Cauldron Linn is considered one of Scotland's greatest natural wonders. It's not just beautiful, but it also has some interesting stories.

Many years ago, around 1818, something amazing happened here. A fox, being chased by a pack of hunting dogs, led them along the riverbank. The fox then crossed the "boiling cauldron." The dogs tried to follow but didn't know the way. One by one, they fell into the cauldron and drowned.

Another story tells of a person who accidentally fell into one of the cauldrons. Luckily, they were rescued, but it was a very difficult and dangerous situation. These stories show just how powerful and unique Cauldron Linn is!
