Cavese 1919, often called just Cavese, is an Italian football club. It is based in Cava de' Tirreni, a town in Campania, Italy. The team currently plays in Serie C Group C.

The first club in the city was started in 1919 as Unione Sportiva Cavese. Later, in 1974, it was restarted as Pro Cavese. In 2012, the club, then known as S.S. Cavese 1919 S.r.l., joined with another local team called "U.S.D. Pro Cavese 1394". They decided to keep the name "Cavese 1919". The club last played in Serie B, a high level of Italian football, in 1984.

Club History

Early Years and Challenges

The team began in 1919 as Unione Sportiva Cavese. Their very first game was against Salernitana, which they won 3–2. The team's nickname is Aquilotti, which means "Eagle Scouts".

In 1922, Cavese joined with another local team, Libertas Sporting Club. This helped them become stronger. That same year, they were allowed to play in the Prima Divisione, which was like today's top league, Serie A. After a few tough years, the team faced money problems and was moved down to a lower league in 1925.

After playing in lower divisions for 10 years, S.S. Cavese moved up to the Prima Divisione again in 1937. This was then the fourth-highest league. With a new stadium, Stadio Francis Palmentieri, and a famous player named Virgilio Levratto, the Aquilotti climbed up to Serie C. However, in 1948, the club had more money troubles and went back to minor leagues. In 1964, they made it to Serie D.

In 1974, Cavese merged with Pro Salerno, another Serie D team, and changed its name to Pro Cavese. They returned to Serie C in 1977 and went back to their original name in 1980.

Reaching Serie B and Famous Wins

In 1981, Cavese achieved its first and only promotion to Serie B. This was a big moment for the club! In their first Serie B season, they finished 15th, which meant they stayed in the league.

The 1982–83 Serie B season was the best in Cavese's history. They almost made it to Serie A, finishing third at the halfway point and sixth at the end of the season. This season is famous for their amazing 2–1 win in San Siro against A.C. Milan, one of Italy's biggest clubs. The goals for Cavese were scored by Tivelli and Di Michele.

However, the very next season, Cavese was moved down to Serie C1. They haven't been able to reach Serie B since. In 1991, the team was even removed from Italian football for a short time. They were later allowed back into a league called Eccellenza Campania as S.S. Cavese 1919.

Recent Times and New Beginnings

In the 2000s, Cavese returned to professional Italian leagues. In the 2005–06 Serie C2 season, they won their division and moved back to Serie C1. In the 2006–07 Serie C1 season, they finished third. This allowed them to play in the promotion playoffs. They nearly made it, but were knocked out by Foggia in a very close match.

In early 2009, Cavese even beat Napoli 2–1 in a friendly match.

Starting in 2010, fans of the club also became part-owners. A local photographer, Michele Angelo Sica, became the main director.

At the end of the 2010–11 Lega Pro Prima Divisione season, Cavese was moved down to a lower league. In July 2011, the club decided not to fight against being removed from professional football.

The Phoenix Club

In July 2012, another club called U.S.D. Pro Cavese 1394 stepped in. This club was named to honor one of Cavese's old names. They made an agreement with S.S. Cavese 1919 to become a "phoenix club." This means a new club rises from the ashes of an old one. U.S.D. Pro Cavese 1394 then applied to play in 2012–13 Serie D. Around the 2013–14 season, Pro Cavese changed its name to U.S.D. Cavese 1919, and then to the current name, Cavese 1919, a few years later.

This new club, U.S.D. Pro Cavese 1394, had been known by other names before. It was originally based in Cava de' Tirreni.

In April 2014, U.S.D. Cavese 1919 faced a penalty of 3 points in the 2013–14 Serie D season. The club's chairman, Salvatore Manna, also left his role that month.

Cavese 1919 was promoted back to Serie C in 2018. They were chosen to replace teams that couldn't register for the 2018–19 Serie C season. Cavese had reached the finals of the promotion playoffs in their 2017–18 Serie D group, showing they were ready to move up.
