How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People: Early Census Records
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 942 people lived in the Caín Bajo barrio at that time.
