The growth of Temple University has brought many changes. For example, the Progress Plaza shopping center has become much busier. This is because students living nearby spend money at the shops. The Story Behind the Name
The neighborhood is named after Cecil Bassett Moore (1915–1979). He was a lawyer and an important leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Philadelphia. He worked hard to make sure everyone had equal rights, no matter their race.
One of his most famous actions was leading protests against Girard College. This led to the school allowing students of all races to attend. Cecil B. Moore also fought for many other important causes. He wanted schools and job unions to be open to everyone. He also pushed for more political and economic chances for African Americans.
He is also remembered for helping to calm things down in Philadelphia after some difficult times in 1964. During his time as president of the local NAACP chapter, its membership grew from 7,000 to over 50,000 in just a few years. This shows how many people supported his work.
