Cecil Exum (born August 7, 1962 – died July 3, 2023) was an American professional basketball player. He played for eight seasons in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL). Before that, he played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. With them, he helped win the NCAA championship in 1982.

Early Life and High School Basketball
Cecil Exum was born in Dudley, North Carolina. He went to Southern Wayne High School there. He was a talented basketball player in high school. In fact, he was the only male basketball player to have his jersey number retired by the school. This is a special honor given to top athletes.
College Basketball Career
Exum played four years of college basketball at the University of North Carolina. This was from 1980 to 1984. He was part of the amazing 1982 team that won the NCAA championship.
That championship team included future basketball legends. Two of them were Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Even though he played fewer minutes, Exum was a valuable part of that winning team. He played in 103 games during his college career.
Professional Basketball in Australia
After college, Cecil Exum was chosen by the Denver Nuggets in the 1984 NBA draft. He was the 194th pick overall. However, a serious knee injury stopped him from playing in the NBA.
In 1986, Exum moved to Australia. He started playing for the Bulleen Boomers. This team was in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). In his second year, 1987, he was named to the All-SEABL Team. This meant he was one of the best players in that league.
In 1989, Exum joined the North Melbourne Giants. This team played in Australia's top league, the NBL. He had a great first season and helped the Giants win an NBL championship.
He later played for the Melbourne Tigers in 1990. Then he returned to the Giants in 1991. From 1992 to 1996, he played five seasons for the Geelong Supercats. Over his NBL career, he played 197 games. He averaged about 10.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
Family and Coaching
Cecil Exum and his wife, Desiree, had three children. Their names are Jamaar, Dante, and Tierra. His son, Dante Exum, also became a professional basketball player. Dante has played in the NBA and for the Australian national team.
Cecil Exum loved basketball so much that he coached for many years. By 2017, he had coached junior basketball players for 27 years. He coached in Melbourne, Australia. He helped many young players learn the game.
His Passing
Cecil Exum passed away on July 3, 2023. He was 60 years old. He died in Los Angeles, California.
