Danté Exum (born 13 July 1995) is an Australian professional basketball player. He plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Instead of going to college, he was chosen by the Utah Jazz as the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

Exum has also played for the Australian national team. He won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Early Basketball Journey

Danté Exum was born in East Melbourne, Australia. His parents are from America. He started playing basketball for the Keilor Thunder when he was young. He also played Australian rules football at school.

He went to Thomas Carr College in Melbourne. Later, he moved to Canberra to attend the Australian Institute of Sport. He also went to Lake Ginninderra Secondary College. In 2013, he helped Lake Ginninderra win the Australian National High School Basketball Championships.

In April 2013, Exum played in the Nike Hoop Summit. He was part of the World Select Team. He scored 16 points and helped his team win against the USA Junior Select Team.

After high school in October 2013, Exum could have played college basketball. However, he decided to go straight to the NBA draft. In January 2014, he announced he would enter the 2014 NBA draft.

Professional Career Highlights

Playing for the Utah Jazz (2014–2019)

The Utah Jazz picked Exum as the fifth player overall in the 2014 NBA draft. He played his first NBA game on 29 October 2014. He scored five points in that game. On 22 January, he scored a career-high 15 points. He made five three-pointers in a win against the Milwaukee Bucks.

On 1 April, he made a career-high 12 assists in a game. As a rookie, he played in all 82 games. He started 41 of those games. He averaged 4.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Exum was one of only 10 rookies in Jazz history to play all 82 games. He scored 10 or more points in 13 games. He also led his team in assists 11 times. He was chosen to play in the 2015 Rising Stars Challenge.

In August 2015, Exum had a serious knee injury while playing for Australia. He needed surgery and missed the entire 2015–16 season. He returned for the 2016–17 season. On 11 March, he scored a new career-high of 22 points.

In October 2017, Exum had shoulder surgery. He played his first game of that season on 15 March 2018. He scored 10 points in a win against the Phoenix Suns. On 30 March 2018, he scored 21 points.

On 6 July 2018, Exum signed again with the Jazz. On 27 December 2018, he scored 20 points. Two days later, he had 13 points and a career-high 13 assists. In January 2019, he hurt his ankle and missed many games. Later, he had another knee injury.

Time with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2019–2021)

On 24 December 2019, Exum was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played for them until January 2021. On 16 January 2021, he was traded to the Houston Rockets as part of a big trade. He did not play any regular season games for Houston. He was later released by the Rockets in October 2021.

Playing in Europe (2021–2023)

On 7 December 2021, Exum signed with FC Barcelona in Spain. They play in the Liga ACB and the EuroLeague.

On 10 July 2022, Exum signed with Partizan Mozzart Bet in Serbia. During the 2022–23 season, Partizan played in the EuroLeague playoffs. Exum averaged 13.2 points per game. Partizan won the ABA League championship in 2023.

Back to the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks (2023–present)

On 14 July 2023, Exum signed with the Dallas Mavericks. He played his first game for the Mavericks on 25 October. On 12 December, Exum scored a season-high 26 points. He also made a career-high seven three-pointers in a win against the Los Angeles Lakers.

In the 2023–24 season, he played 55 games and averaged 7.8 points. Exum helped the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals. They lost to the Boston Celtics in five games.

For the 2024–25 NBA season, Exum played 20 games. He averaged 8.7 points. On 14 March 2025, Exum broke a bone in his left hand. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of the season. On July 3, 2025, Exum signed again with the Mavericks.

Exum played for Australia's junior national team. He was part of the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Cup. He was named to the All-Tournament Team there. He also played in the 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. Again, he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

In 2013, Exum made his debut for the senior national team. He played against New Zealand. In 2014, he played for Australia at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Exum was chosen for the Australian basketball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the bronze medal game, he helped Australia win. He scored or assisted on many key points. This helped Australia get a bronze medal.

About Danté's Family

Danté Exum has an older brother named Jamaar. He also has a twin sister named Tierra. His father, Cecil, played college basketball at the University of North Carolina. His father won an NCAA championship in 1982. That team included famous players like Michael Jordan.

Danté's mother also went to North Carolina. His father was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1984. Later, he moved to Australia. He played in the National Basketball League there.

Danté is a big fan of the Essendon Football Club. This is an Australian rules football team. He even wore shoes inspired by Essendon during the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend.
