History of Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids began to grow thanks to the Burlington Railroad. When the railroad tracks were extended to this area, the town started to form. The village was officially planned out in 1879. Its name comes from the nearby Cedar River. The "rapids" part of the name refers to the fast-moving, whitewater sections of the river.
