How Celeryville Got Its Name

Celeryville was first settled by people from the Netherlands. The community was named after the many celery farms that were found near the original town site. This shows how important farming was to the early settlers.

Where is Celeryville Located?

Celeryville is in the southwestern part of Huron County. The center of the community sits right on the border between New Haven and Richmond townships. State Route 103 is the main road here. It follows the township border. This road goes north about 2 miles to Willard and southwest about 11 miles to New Washington. Bullhead Road marks the northern edge of Celeryville. It leads east about 2.5 miles to New Haven.

Unique Farmland Soil

Celeryville is known for its special type of farmland. The soil here is called "muck." This soil is very rich and fertile. It's so rich that in 1897, it actually caught fire! Because of this amazing soil, farmers can grow vegetables much faster than in other places. They can even get one or two extra crops during a single growing season. Ohio State University has an agricultural research center in Celeryville. They study farming methods there.
