History of Center, Wisconsin
The Town of Center has an interesting past. It started out with a different name.
How the Town of Center Began
The area we now know as the Town of Center was first called the Town of Lansing. It was officially set up on September 12, 1849. At that time, it was much larger than it is today. It included the areas of both the modern-day towns of Freedom and Center. It also had some less settled land to the north.
The Big Split
On June 5, 1852, a new town was created. It was called the Town of Freedom. This new town was split off from the original Town of Lansing. When this happened, the Town of Freedom took many things with it. This included the town's leaders, its main meeting place, and many residents. It also took many public improvements that had been made.
A New Start and a New Name
After the split, the remaining part of Lansing needed to reorganize. There were no leaders left to run things. So, a meeting was held on July 5, 1852. The goal was to choose new leaders for the town. Even though it was still called Lansing, it was like starting a new town.
Some people wondered if these new actions were legal. But on April 30, 1853, the state of Wisconsin made a decision. It said that everything the town leaders had done was legal. The state also agreed to a request from the town's board. They wanted to change the town's name from Lansing to Center. This change became official on April 1, 1853.
