Centerton was first planned out in the year 1854. This is when people started to settle and build homes there. In the same year, a post office was opened in Centerton. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years. It stayed open until 1893, when it was closed down.

Centerton is found in the northeastern part of Morgan County. A main road, Indiana State Road 67, runs along the western side of the community. This road helps people travel to nearby towns. If you go south on State Road 67 for about 8 miles, you will reach Martinsville. Martinsville is the main town, or county seat, for Morgan County.
If you head north on State Road 67 for about 7 miles, you will get to Mooresville. The big city of Indianapolis is about 23 miles northeast of Centerton.

Centerton is special because it was the childhood home of a very famous basketball coach, John Wooden. His family farm was located right on the edge of town. There is even a historical marker there to remember him. The Johnny Wooden Interurban parkway is also named after him. John Wooden is known for being one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time.
