The Central American agouti (Dasyprocta punctata) is a type of agouti. It is a small animal that looks a bit like a large guinea pig. These interesting creatures live in forests from southern Mexico, through Central America, and down to parts of Colombia and Ecuador. You can also find them in some areas of Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. They have even been brought to islands like Cuba and the Cayman Islands.

Even though some groups of agoutis are smaller because of hunting or forests being cut down, there are still many of them. So, they are not considered an endangered animal.

Agoutis have an amazing sense of smell! Scientists studied 240 different animals and found that agoutis have one of the best senses of smell. They even smell better than dogs! Their noses are full of special parts that help them sniff out things really well.

What Does the Agouti Look Like?

Central American agoutis usually weigh between 3 and 4.2 kilograms (about 6.6 to 9.3 pounds). Their fur can be reddish, orange, or yellowish, mixed with black hairs.

In some places, like northern Colombia or parts of Costa Rica, their front bodies might be brownish or blackish. Their middle parts can be orange, and their back ends might be black or cream-colored. In other areas, they might have yellowish fur all the way to their rump.

Agoutis from the southern parts of their range, like Peru or Brazil, can be a bit heavier. They might weigh up to 5.2 kilograms (about 11.5 pounds). Their fur is often a mix of brown, yellowish, and black, or black and orange.

How Do Agoutis Behave?

Central American agoutis are active during the day. This means they look for food and move around when the sun is out. They usually live in pairs, meaning a male and a female stay together.

They mostly eat fruits and seeds. Agoutis are very important for the forest because they help spread seeds. When they eat fruit, they often carry the seeds away and bury them. This helps new plants and trees grow in different places.
