The Central Region (called Roinn Meadhanach in Gaelic) was a special area in Scotland. It was set up for local government from 1975 to 1996. It was one of twelve such regions across Scotland at that time.

The main office for the Central Regional Council was in Stirling. This building, called Viewforth, had also been the main office for the old Stirlingshire area.

Today, the area that was once the Central Region is divided into three smaller council areas. These are Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, and Stirling. These three areas used to be smaller parts, called districts, within the Central Region.

How the Central Region Started

In 1975, Scotland changed how its local government worked. This was due to a new law called the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. When they were planning the new Central Region, people talked about where its main office should be.

The two main choices were Falkirk or Stirling. Stirling was chosen because the local council there had just finished building a new office. This new building at Viewforth was ready in 1972.

The End of the Central Region

The Central Regional Council stopped existing on April 1, 1996. This was part of another big change in how Scotland was governed. All the Scottish Regional Councils were closed down by a new law from 1994.

Near the end of the Central Region's time, a primary school in Dunblane was under its care. When the region ended, this school became the responsibility of the new Stirling Council. The school building was later updated in 1998.

What Were Its Districts?

The Central Region was made up of three smaller areas called districts. These districts were:

Even though the Central Region no longer exists, some services still cover the same area. For example, there is still a health board for this area. It is called NHS Forth Valley.
