A Look at Cerro Gordo's Past

Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened in 1898, when Spain gave Puerto Rico to the U.S. as part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but not a state.

In 1899, the United States government counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,008 people lived in the Cerro Gordo barrio at that time.
