A Look Back in Time
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
Puerto Rico has an interesting history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This treaty meant that Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a survey, like a big count, of everyone living in Puerto Rico. They found that the Cerro Gordo neighborhood had 845 residents at that time.
