Exploring San Javier Hill
San Javier Hill is about 24 kilometers (15 miles) from San Miguel de Tucumán, the main city of the province. The road leading up the hill is quite winding, with over 100 curves! As you drive, you'll see lots of green, tropical plants typical of this area.
This mountain range covers a huge area, more than 19,000 hectares. The highest point, called Taficillo, reaches about 1876 meters (6155 feet) high. The hill is covered in different types of forests, like cloud forests and mountain forests (also known as yungas). These forests are home to small villages where people enjoy spending their summers, such as Villa Nougués, El Siambón, Raco, and San Javier itself.
Fun Things to Do
San Javier Hill is a great place for outdoor adventures! You can try exciting sports like paragliding, which lets you fly through the air. There's also trekking (long walks), horseback riding, mountain biking, and regular hiking.
From the hill, you get incredible views. Looking west, you can see the whole city of San Miguel de Tucumán and the flat land around it. On the other side, you'll see green, flat-topped mountains with the tall Calchaquí peaks in the distance.
The small summer village of San Javier is located high up on the mountain, near Yerba Buena, at about 1200 meters (3937 feet) above sea level. A famous landmark here is El Cristo Bendicente, which means "The Blessing Christ." It's a giant statue, 28 meters (92 feet) tall and weighing over 135 tons! A local artist named Juan Carlos Iramain created it. The statue was finished in 1942, the same year the village was founded. Because it's so big, you can even see it from the city below!
Weather on the Hill
The weather on San Javier Hill is nice all year round. It's especially pleasant in the summer when it can get very hot in San Miguel de Tucumán. Sometimes, in winter, you might even see a little snow fall, which is a rare and exciting sight!
