Chacraraju or Chakraraju is a tall mountain in the Cordillera Blanca range. This mountain range is part of the Andes mountains in Peru. The name Chacraraju might come from the Quechua language. Chakra means a small farm or field. Rahu means snow, ice, or a snowy mountain.
Chacraraju has two main parts, called peaks. The west peak is Chacraraju Oeste. It is about 6,108 meters (20,039 feet) high. The east peak is Chacraraju Este. It is about 6,001 meters (19,688 feet) high.
Where is Chacraraju?
Chacraraju is located in a place called Huaylas Province. This province is in the Ancash region of Peru. You can find it south and southeast of another mountain called Pirámide. It is also east of a beautiful place called Lake Parón. Climbers can usually reach the mountain from the Pisco base camp. This camp is located at Cebollapampa.
Climbing Chacraraju
Chacraraju is known as one of the hardest mountains to climb in the Andes. It is considered the steepest mountain over 6,000 meters (about 19,685 feet) in the range.
The first time someone successfully climbed Chacraraju was in 1956. A group from France, led by a famous climber named Lionel Terray, reached the west peak (Chakrarahu Oeste). This happened on July 31, 1956. Later, on August 5, 1962, the same team climbed the east peak (Chakrarahu Este). They used routes on the northeast face and northeast ridge. These routes are now known as the usual ways to climb the mountain. Climbing Chacraraju is very challenging, and some climbers have been injured trying to reach its top.
