History of Chadbourn
A post office opened in Chadbourn in 1882. The town officially became a town (was incorporated) in 1883. It was named after a local family who worked in the lumber business.
Geography and Location
Chadbourn is located in an area known as the Carolina Border Belt. This region is famous for its tobacco markets and warehouses. These markets are found on both sides of the North Carolina-South Carolina border.
The town covers a total area of about 6.74 square kilometers (2.6 square miles). All of this area is land.

- The old route of U.S. Route 74 runs east to west through Chadbourn.
- North Carolina Highway 410 travels north to south through the town.
Chadbourn was once an important stop for passenger trains. Until 1955, you could transfer trains here to go to places like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. You could also connect to trains heading to Florence, South Carolina, Sumter, South Carolina, Columbia, Augusta, Georgia, and Wilmington. The last passenger train left Chadbourn in 1965 or 1966. After that, the station only handled freight.
