Chaffee's Economy
For many years, Chaffee's economy was mostly about making textiles. Textiles are fabrics and clothes. This made sense because a lot of cotton is grown by farmers in southeast Missouri. Also, Chaffee is close to the Mississippi River, which helped with transporting goods. So, processing cotton locally was a good idea.
However, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the city's economy faced big challenges. Several factories closed down. For example, the Columbia Sportswear factory and the Florsheim Shoe Company stopped their operations. This meant many people lost their jobs. Nearly 450 jobs were lost in just six months. This was a big problem for a city with only about 3,000 people. It meant over 60% of the jobs in the town were gone.
