Chalbori-ppang (Hangul: 찰보리빵; pronounced "chahl-boh-ree-ppang") is a super tasty sweet snack from South Korea. Imagine two small, soft pancakes made from a special kind of barley flour. These pancakes are wrapped around a yummy filling of sweet red bean paste.
This round, flat, and slightly sweet treat feels a bit like a chewy sponge cake. It's a popular snack that many people enjoy in South Korea!
Discover Chalbori-ppang
Chalbori-ppang was first created and sold in 2003. It started at a bakery called Danseokga in a city called Gyeongju, which is in North Gyeongsang Province. Since then, it has become a famous local specialty of Gyeongju.
Special Barley
What makes chalbori-ppang so special? It uses a unique type of barley that grows in fields near Danseoksan (Mount Danseok). This barley is extra special because it's grown without pesticides. How? Barley grows during the cold winter months. During this time, pests and weeds can't grow well, so farmers don't need to use harmful chemicals. This makes the barley, and the chalbori-ppang, even better!
