Chalinochromis brichardi is a cool type of fish that belongs to the Cichlidae family. You can find this fish in Lake Tanganyika, a big lake in Africa. It lives in countries like Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia. This fish builds its home, a nest made of small rocks, hidden among plants or algae. It mostly eats tiny creatures without backbones, like insects. The fish was named after Pierre Brichard, who was a fish collector.

Meet the Chalinochromis brichardi
These fish usually grow to about 8.9 centimeters (3.5 inches) long. Some have even been seen growing up to 14 centimeters (5.5 inches) when kept in aquariums. Adult C. brichardi fish don't have stripes on their bodies. Instead, they have cool black stripes only around their faces. This helps tell them apart from other fish in the Chalinochromis group.
But young C. brichardi look very different! When they are young, they have stripes all over their bodies. As they get older and become adults, these body stripes disappear. Only the black stripes around their heads remain.
Keeping Chalinochromis brichardi as Pets
Chalinochromis brichardi are not very common in pet stores. If you find one, they can be interesting fish to keep in an aquarium.
What Do They Eat?
In the wild, these fish eat small crustaceans and insect larvae. These tiny foods live on rocks and plants in the lake. When they eat, they also swallow a bit of algae and sand. In an aquarium, they are not picky eaters. You can feed them things like mysis shrimp, krill, flakes, pellets, mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp.
Setting Up Their Tank
Chalinochromis brichardi need special water conditions to be healthy. The water should have a pH of at least 8.2. It's even better if the pH is between 8.5 and 8.7. They also need water that is quite hard.
Their tank should be at least 114 liters (30 gallons) in size. They love a tank with lots of rocks and caves. These caves give them places to hide and lay their eggs. These fish can be a bit territorial. It's best to keep them with other fish that stay mostly at the bottom of the tank and don't bother them.
