Early Success and First Big Wins
Chan started making a name for himself around 2009. That year, he and Goh reached their first final at the Vietnam Open. A year later, in 2010, they won the Badminton Asia Championships. This was a huge victory, making them the first mixed doubles pair from Malaysia to win the title.
In 2012, Chan and Goh made history by becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles team to play in the Olympic Games. Later that year, they won their first Super Series title at the Japan Open, a very important tournament. These wins helped them climb to number 3 in the world rankings.
The Road to the Olympics
For a short time in 2014, Chan played with a new partner, Lai Pei Jing, because Goh needed surgery on her knee. He still found success, winning a gold medal in the mixed team event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
When Goh returned in 2015, she and Chan quickly got back to their winning ways. They won three tournaments that year. Their hard work paid off when they qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
At the Olympics, Chan and Goh played brilliantly. They fought their way through tough matches to reach the final. In the final match, they played against a strong team from Indonesia and won the silver medal. This was a historic moment, as they became the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair to ever win an Olympic medal.
Later Career and New Partners
Chan and Goh continued to compete at a high level. In 2017, they became the first Malaysian mixed doubles pair in over 60 years to reach the final of the famous All England Open.
In December 2018, Chan and Goh decided to leave the Badminton Association of Malaysia to become independent players. They continued to play together and won more titles, including the New Zealand Open. They also competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
In late 2021, Chan and Goh announced they would no longer be playing together, ending their 13-year partnership. Chan then teamed up with other players, including Valeree Siow and Cheah Yee See, before retiring in 2024.
