Chances Peak is the highest point on the island of Montserrat. This island is a British overseas territory located in the Caribbean Sea. Chances Peak is actually the top of an active volcano called Soufrière Hills. This volcano is a special type known as a stratovolcano.
What is a Stratovolcano?
A stratovolcano is a tall, cone-shaped volcano. It is built up by many layers of hardened lava, ash, and rocks. These volcanoes often have explosive eruptions. Soufrière Hills is a good example of this type of volcano.
Where is Chances Peak Located?
Chances Peak sits on a special area of the Earth's crust. This area is called a destructive plate margin. The volcano itself is in the middle of the Caribbean plate. However, the North American Plate and the Atlantic Plate are slowly moving under it. This movement causes a lot of pressure to build up. This pressure then leads to the formation of volcanoes like Soufrière Hills.
A Sad Event
On September 17, 1965, a large airplane, a Boeing 707, was flying as Pan Am Flight 292. Sadly, the plane crashed into Chances Peak near its top. All 30 people on board tragically lost their lives in this accident.
