Chaotic: Shadow Warriors (2009)

Chaotic started as a cool Danish trading card game. It later grew into an online game in America. Then, it even became a popular TV show based on the game!

You might have seen the show on channels like 4Kids TV, Jetix, The CW4Kids, Cartoon Network, and Disney XD. Bryan C. Gannon and Chaotic USA Entertainment Group brought the game from Denmark to the United States. It was produced by Chaotic USA Entertainment Group, 4Kids Productions, and Bardel Entertainment. The trading card game first launched on September 6, 2006, in the U.S. and Canada.

Each physical card came with a special code. Players could use this code on the Chaotic website. This let them trade and play online using their own card collection. Chaotic was famous for having a TV show, an online game, and a card game all connected. Sadly, the online game is no longer active.

The Chaotic TV Show: What's it About?

The Chaotic TV series tells a story based on the original card game. The main character is a teenager named Tom. His friend Kaz often tells him wild stories about his adventures in a place called Chaotic. Tom thinks Kaz is just making things up. He believes Chaotic is only a card game.

But then, Tom gets a special password from the game. When he uses it, he's instantly transported to the world of Chaotic! That's when Tom realizes Kaz was telling the truth. In Chaotic, Tom meets new friends like the brave Sarah and funny Peyton. He also faces enemies, including the bossy duo Klay and Krystella.

Players in Chaotic travel to a place called Perim. There, they can scan new creatures and use them in battles. Tom meets many creatures in Perim, including his favorite, Maxxor. Battles between players happen in special areas called dromes. These are virtual fights where players become the creatures they choose. They fight to earn the right to battle the drome master, also known as a code master.

In Perim, four main tribes are fighting for something called the Cothica. The Cothica is a powerful energy that controls all of Perim. In the second season, a fifth tribe, the M'arrillians, escapes from the Deepmines. They try to take over the other four tribes by brainwashing creatures. This season used a cool animation style, like Japanese anime. Season three was called "Secrets of the Lost City." It had many small stories, but only a few were about the "Lost City."

Chaotic Trading Card Game: How to Play

The Chaotic Trading Card Game uses five different types of cards:

  • Creatures: These are the characters you control in battle.
  • Battlegear: This is a special item each creature gets at the start of a battle.
  • Attacks: These cards are used to hurt your opponent's creatures.
  • Mugic: This is a mix of music and magic. Creatures with "mugic counters" can use these powerful spells.
  • Locations: These are the places where creatures battle. All locations are real places in Perim.

Meet the Tribes of Perim

There are five main tribes of creatures in Chaotic:

  • OverWorld: This tribe includes creatures that look like humans or real animals.
  • UnderWorld: This tribe has creatures that look like different kinds of monsters.
  • Danians: These creatures usually look like ants, but some are based on other insects.
  • Mipedians: This tribe is made up of creatures that look like various lizards.
  • M'arrillians: These creatures resemble deep-sea animals. Some even look see-through, like jellyfish.

Playing the Game: Basics

Two players control an army of creatures in the game. Your goal is to lower the "energy" of your opponent's creatures to zero. You can do this using attacks, mugic, or special creature abilities.

You can play the game with different army sizes:

  • 1 vs 1 (one creature per player)
  • 3 vs 3
  • 6 vs 6
  • 10 vs 10

The game also has different levels of complexity.

  • Advanced Apprentice: This is a simpler version. No mugic is used, and combat is only with attacks.
  • Masters: This is the next level up. You use mugic and special creature abilities. Masters games take longer and require you to know all the rules well.

Starting a Chaotic Battle

The basic rules of Chaotic are easy to learn. Each player starts with their creatures and battlegear cards face-down. When the game begins, you flip your creatures face-up. Any battlegear that says to be flipped up also gets revealed.

You can only have two of the same card in your army. However, some cards are "unique" and you can only have one of them. The starting player is chosen (for example, the youngest player or by a coin toss). That player flips their top location card face-up.

The other player can then move a creature to an empty space on the mat. Or, they can move a creature into a space already taken by an opponent's creature. This starts a combat! In Advanced Apprentice rules, combat is the only way to defeat your opponent's creatures.

When combat begins, players check which creature gets "initiative." Initiative depends on the location and the creatures fighting there. It could be based on a creature's stats, tribe, or element. The player with initiative gets to play the first attack.

Attacks and Winning

Each player starts the game with a deck of 20 attack cards. You begin with 2 of these attacks in your hand. At the start of each player's turn during combat, you draw one more attack card.

Attack cards have "build points" that add up to 20. This stops players from only using the strongest cards. During your turn, you must play an attack card. This card then goes to your discard pile. By playing attacks, you lower the energy of your opponent's creature. This is the main way to win the game!
