Verna Charlene Stavely, known professionally as Charlene Holt (April 28, 1928 – April 5, 1996), was an American actress and model. She was famous for her supporting roles in many movies and television shows.
Early Life and Modeling Career
Charlene Holt was born on April 28, 1928, in Snyder, Texas. Her parents were Malcolm C. and Verna Vesta Stavely. After finishing high school in Hagerman, New Mexico, she went to McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Before acting, she worked as a model in Houston, Texas.
In 1956, Charlene won the title of Miss Maryland. Later that year, she took part in the Miss USA pageant in Long Beach, California. She made it to the semi-finals in this big competition. In 1957, she was one of nine models chosen to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This trip was for a special fashion event.
Charlene also appeared in various TV commercials in 1958. She even signed a big modeling contract in New York City. She was in a Revlon lipstick commercial. The famous director Howard Hawks reportedly saw her in this ad. He later cast her in several of his films. These included Man's Favorite Sport and El Dorado. In October 1958, she was named "Miss Sweater Girl" by the Wool Bureau.
Acting Career
Charlene Holt's first movie role was in 1962. She played Lisa, a model, in the comedy film If a Man Answers. This movie starred Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee. After this, she appeared in many other films and TV shows. Her acting career lasted until 1980.
