Charles Catton the younger (born December 30, 1756 – died April 24, 1819) was an artist born in England. He became an American artist later in life. He was known for painting landscapes, illustrating books, and creating scenes for the theatre.

Early Life and Artistic Journey

Charles Catton the younger was born in London, England. His father, Charles Catton the elder, was also an artist and taught him a lot about art. Charles also studied at the famous Royal Academy schools, which are very important art schools.

He loved to travel all over England and Scotland. During his travels, he made many sketches. Some of these sketches were later turned into prints and published for people to see. He became well-known for painting beautiful landscapes and for creating backgrounds for plays in theatres.

Exhibitions and Published Works

In 1775, when he was still quite young, Charles Catton showed some of his paintings at the Royal Academy. These included a View of London from Blackfriars Bridge and a view of Westminster from Westminster Bridge. Imagine painting such big city scenes!

In 1793, he worked with another artist, E. A. Burney, to create designs for a book called Fables by John Gay. These designs were later published in the book. Between 1776 and 1800, he showed a total of 37 artworks at the Royal Academy. During this time, he lived in a place called Purley.

From 1781 to 1794, Charles Catton was a scene painter at the famous Covent Garden theatre. This meant he painted the large backdrops and scenery that you would see on stage during plays.

Animals Drawn from Nature

In 1788, Charles Catton published a special book called Animals Drawn from Nature and Engraved in Aqua-tinta. This was an early type of book with coloured prints called aquatints. The book featured pictures and descriptions of 36 different animals from all over the world. He wrote the descriptions and etched the pictures himself.

Life in America

In 1804, Charles Catton decided to move to the United States. He settled on a farm near the River Hudson with his two daughters and a son. He lived there for the rest of his life. Even though he was on a farm, he continued to paint sometimes. It is said that he became quite successful through his art.

Charles Catton the younger passed away on April 24, 1819.
