Charles D. Hayne (1844–1913) was an important American politician from South Carolina. He also worked as a tailor and helped build railroads. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1868 to 1872. Later, he was a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1872 to 1876.

Charles D. Hayne was born in Charleston, South Carolina. His father was white, and his mother, Isabella R., was a free Black woman. He was also related to Robert Y. Hayne, a well-known politician from South Carolina. Charles went to school in Charleston. When he was younger, he worked as a tailor, making clothes.

Charles Hayne's Early Career

After the American Civil War, Charles Hayne became a teacher. He worked for the Freedmen's Bureau. This organization helped formerly enslaved people learn new skills and find jobs. Hayne was sent to teach in Barnwell County, South Carolina.

In 1868, Charles Hayne was chosen for two important roles. He became a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1868. This meeting helped create new rules for the state. In the same year, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He was re-elected to this position in 1870.

Helping Build Railroads

Charles Hayne was also involved in business. In 1870, he joined the first board of directors for the Enterprise Railroad. This was a special railroad company because it was owned by Black people. He also served on the boards of other companies. This showed his interest in helping South Carolina grow and develop.

Serving in the Senate

In 1873, Charles Hayne was elected to the South Carolina Senate. He served a four-year term in this role. He continued to work for his community. His time in politics ended in 1876, when the Reconstruction era finished.

Charles Hayne's brothers, Henry E. Hayne and James N. Hayne, also held political jobs. This shows that public service was important to their family. Charles Hayne also served as a warden in Aiken County, South Carolina. He was also a lieutenant colonel in the state militia, which was a local defense group.
