The Characters was a very successful music team. This duo won a Grammy Award for their work. They were famous for creating songs and producing music for R&B groups in the 1990s. Some of these groups included Boyz II Men, Destiny's Child, and Riff.
The team started when Troy Taylor decided to focus on writing and producing music. He teamed up with Charles Farrar in the early 1990s. They took some songs originally meant for Troy's own album. These songs ended up on Boyz II Men's popular first album, Cooleyhighharmony. Later, they worked with Boyz II Men again. They created the song "Jezzebel" for the 1994 Grammy-winning album II.
A few years later, a young R&B artist named Johntá Austin joined their team. He was only 13 years old at the time. Together, they wrote songs like "Realize" for Jason Weaver. They also created "Here For You" for SWV's 1997 album Release Some Tension. Another big hit they wrote was "Sweet Lady" for Tyrese Gibson.
Troy Taylor and Charles Farrar also helped create and sign girl groups in the 1990s. One example was OSCAR, a multi-racial R&B group. OSCAR released their album Spotlight in 1992. This was done through their own company, Character Music Corporation.
