Charles Gray Round (born January 28, 1797 – died December 1, 1867) was an important person in British politics and law. He worked as a barrister (a type of lawyer). He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for North Essex from 1837 to 1847. This means he was elected to represent his area in the country's government.

Round also served as a Recorder for Colchester. This was a judge-like role. He was also a magistrate, helping to keep law and order. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Essex, which is a ceremonial role. Besides his public duties, he owned a lot of land in the area.

Early Life and Education

Charles Gray Round went to school at Winchester and then Felsted from 1810 to 1814. He then studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. He was a very good student, graduating with top honors in classics in 1818. He became a lawyer in 1822.

People thought Round was a very smart and skilled lawyer. He was known for his sharp mind, even if he wasn't the best at public speaking.

A Career in Law and Politics

Round held important positions in the legal system. He was the Chairman of the Essex Quarter Sessions for twenty years. This meant he led important court meetings in Essex. He was also the Recorder of Colchester for nearly thirty years.

He was very active as a magistrate in Essex. This role meant he helped enforce laws and keep the peace. In politics, he was elected as an MP for North Essex in 1837 without anyone running against him. He held this seat until 1847. After that, he tried to become an MP for the University of Oxford but lost to William Ewart Gladstone.

Helping His Community

Charles Gray Round was a strong supporter of many religious groups linked to the Church of England. He also helped start the Essex Archaeological Society. This group studies the history and old buildings of Essex.

Round inherited a lot of land in Colchester from his father, who was also named Charles. This included a large house called Birch Hall. He rebuilt Birch Hall between 1843 and 1848, making it a beautiful mansion. He also took ownership of Colchester Castle and its park.

In 1863, Round stepped down from his role as Recorder of Colchester. In 1838, he married Emma Sarah. They worked together to help their local community. They supported religion and education in their parish (local area). They also did a lot of charity work and provided homes for people who worked on their estate.

Charles Gray Round and his wife did not have any children. After he passed away, his nephew, James Round, became the owner of Birch Hall. In his will, Charles Gray Round made sure that money was set aside to build sea defences near Clacton-on-Sea. These defenses would help protect the coast from the sea.
