Charles Hawkes Todd (born November 6, 1784 – died March 19, 1826) was an important medical doctor in Ireland. He even became the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1821.

Early Life

Charles Todd was born in Sligo, Ireland, on November 6, 1784. His father, Andrew Todd, was also a doctor and pharmacist. In 1804, Charles married Elizabeth Bentley.

A Doctor's Career

Charles Todd went to school in Dublin. Instead of going to university, he became an apprentice to Dr. James Henthorn, who was a relative. This meant he learned medicine by working with an experienced doctor.

On June 28, 1803, Charles passed his examination at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. This was a big step in becoming a surgeon.

In April 1809, he became a surgeon at the House of Industry Hospitals. These hospitals later became known as Carmichael School. Here, he taught students about anatomy (the study of the body's structure) and surgery (medical operations).

By 1819, Todd was made a Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Just two years later, in 1821, he was chosen to be the president of the college. This was a very high honor!

To remember his contributions, the Royal College placed a special statue, called a bust, of him in their main hall. Also, medical students in Dublin put up a special plaque at St. Patrick's Cathedral in memory of Charles and Elizabeth. Their children later added a beautiful memorial window there too.

Family Life

Dr. Charles Todd and Elizabeth Bentley Todd had a very large family! They had nine sons and six daughters, making a total of fifteen children. Most of their children grew up and got married.

Many of their sons followed in their father's footsteps:

  • Four of his sons became medical doctors.
  • Three became members of the clergy (like priests or ministers).
  • One became a lawyer.

Some of his children became quite famous:

  • Their first son, James Henthorn Todd, was a well-known Irish scholar and a professor at Trinity College in Dublin.
  • Their second son, Robert Bentley Todd, was a doctor in London. He is famous for describing several medical conditions, including one now called Todd's palsy.
  • Their youngest son, Armstrong Todd, was also a doctor in London. He was known for his work with anesthesiology (making patients feel no pain during surgery) and new surgical methods.

Charles Todd passed away on March 19, 1826, in Dublin. He was buried at St. James' Church, Dublin. His wife, Elizabeth, died many years later in 1862 and was buried near him.
