Charles Holland (born March 12, 1733 – died December 7, 1769) was an English actor. He was born in Chiswick, a town in England. His father worked as a baker.
Early Life and Acting Career
Charles Holland began his acting career in 1755. His first performance was at the famous Drury Lane theater. He played the main character in a play called Oroonoko. Other well-known actors were also in the cast. These included John Palmer, Richard Yates, and Susanna Cibber.
Holland worked closely with David Garrick. Garrick was a very famous actor and theater manager of that time. Charles Holland was the first actor to play the character Florizel. This was in Garrick's special version of Shakespeare's play, The Winter's Tale.
A Short Life
Sadly, Charles Holland died at the age of 36. He passed away from a serious illness called smallpox.
David Garrick thought very highly of Holland. He even wrote a special message to honor him. This message was placed on Holland's monument. The monument itself was sculpted by an artist named William Tyler RA. You can find Holland's monument in St Nicholas Church, Chiswick.
Family in Theater
Charles Holland had a nephew who was also named Charles Holland. This nephew (born in 1768, died in 1849) followed in his uncle's footsteps. He became an actor too. He performed alongside other famous actors of his time. These included Sarah Siddons and Edmund Kean.
