Charles IV in his Hunting Clothes is a famous painting from 1799. It was created by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. This painting shows King Charles IV of Spain dressed for hunting. It is the second portrait Goya painted of this king.

Goya paid close attention to the king's clothes and sash in the painting. However, he also showed the king's less strong features. The king appears to have a large belly and a look that seems unsure. One art expert described his face as like "an affable turtle poking from its shell." This painting is now part of Spain's national art collection. You can see it at the Royal Palace of Madrid.
During his career, Goya painted both King Charles IV and his father, King Charles III of Spain, in hunting clothes. Goya might have been inspired by other famous artists. For example, the hunting outfit of Charles III might be like the one in a portrait by Diego Velázquez. Goya also honored Titian's painting Portrait of Charles V with a dog. He did this by including a loyal dog looking up at the king in his own portrait.
Goya and the Spanish Kings
Goya worked as a painter for the royal family. He had also painted King Charles III of Spain, who was seen as a very smart ruler. His son, King Charles IV, was not always seen as strong a leader. He was more interested in sports and hunting than in running the country. This became a problem when Napoleon became powerful.
Goya painted Charles III in 1780, when Goya was a young artist. Some art experts believe Goya did not think highly of King Charles IV. Later works, like Charles IV of Spain and His Family, show the king looking a bit heavy and confused. He seems more like a country gentleman than a powerful king.
