Early Life and Education
Charles Memorial Hamilton was born on November 1, 1840. His hometown was Pine Creek Township in Clinton County, Pennsylvania.
He went to public schools when he was younger. Later, he studied law and graduated from the Columbia Law School. This school was located in Columbia, Pennsylvania.
Serving in the Military
During the American Civil War, Charles Hamilton joined the Union Army in 1861. He started as a private soldier. He was part of Company A, Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves.
He later became a judge-advocate for the army. This role meant he helped with legal matters in military courts. He also worked on the staff of the Military Governor of Washington, D.C.. In 1865, he moved to Marianna, Florida as part of his military duties.
Political Career in Florida
After the war, Charles Hamilton became a lawyer. He was allowed to practice law in 1867 in Marianna, Florida.
When Florida was able to send representatives to Congress again, Hamilton was elected. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses. His time in Congress was from July 1, 1868, to March 3, 1871. He tried to be re-elected in 1870 but was not successful.
After his time in Congress, Hamilton continued to serve Florida. In February 1871, he was named Senior Major General of the Florida Militia.
He also worked as the postmaster of Jacksonville, Florida. This job lasted from July 27, 1871, to March 1, 1872. Later, in February 1872, he became the collector of customs in Key West, Florida. This job involved collecting taxes on goods coming into the port. He had to leave this position because he became ill.
Later Life and Death
Charles Memorial Hamilton passed away on October 22, 1875. He died in his hometown of Pine Creek Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He was buried at the Jersey Shore Cemetery.
