The Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts is a special building in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. It is a place where people can enjoy live shows and learn about sports history. The centre is home to a music hall and the famous Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.
This building is the main spot for the yearly Festival of the Sound. This festival brings amazing classical music to Parry Sound every summer. The centre is named after Charles W. Stockey, who was a big supporter of the Festival of the Sound from the very beginning. Building the centre cost about CAD$12.4 million. Construction began in the spring of 2002, and it officially opened in July 2003.
What's Inside the Centre?
The Charles W. Stockey Centre is located on a beautiful piece of land. It sits on a small peninsula where the Seguin River meets Parry Sound on Georgian Bay. It's right next to the town's busy harbour. The building has a lot of space, about 2,500 square metres (27,000 square feet) in total.
The Music Hall
One of the main parts of the centre is its music hall. This hall can seat up to 480 people. It was designed with special care to make sure the sound is perfect for music. Experts called Artec Consultants helped make the acoustics (how sound travels) just right. This makes it a great place to listen to concerts and other performances.
Bobby Orr Hall of Fame
The centre also has the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. This part of the building celebrates Bobby Orr, a legendary ice hockey player. Bobby Orr grew up in Parry Sound, so it's a special place to honour his amazing career. You can learn all about his achievements and see cool hockey memorabilia here.
Building Design
The design of the Charles W. Stockey Centre is quite unique. It was made to look and feel like a cozy Georgian Bay cottage. You will see a lot of wood used throughout the building. This wood is not just for decoration; it's also part of the building's structure. This design helps the centre fit in with the natural beauty of the Georgian Bay area.
