The Seguin River is a cool river in central Ontario, Canada. It flows through the Parry Sound District. The river ends its journey by emptying into Parry Sound. This area is part of Georgian Bay, which is a large bay on Lake Huron. The town of Parry Sound is located right where the river meets the bay. The river's name, "Seguin," comes from the Ojibwe language. It means "spring," like the season when everything starts to grow!
Where the River Flows
The Seguin River starts its journey at Horn Lake. This lake is close to the community of Bear Lake. From there, the river flows southwest. It passes through Upper Fry Lake and Lower Fry Lake.
Near Seguin Falls, you can see a series of waterfalls. The river then crosses under the old path of the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway. This path is now a fun walking and biking trail called the Seguin Trail.
The river continues southwest into Isabella Lake. Here, another smaller river, the Little Seguin River, joins it. The Seguin River then flows over a few exciting rapids. These include the Serpent Rapids, the Indian Rapids, and the Hab Rapids.
As the river gets closer to its end, it flows through the township of McDougall. The Manitouwabing River, another tributary, joins it here. The Seguin River then goes through Mountain Chute.
Finally, the river reaches Mill Lake in the town of Parry Sound. It flows under Ontario Highway 400 and over the Mill Lake Dam. It also passes under a low bridge used by the Canadian National Railway. The river then goes over the Cascade Street Dam and the Trestle Dam. It flows under the tall Parry Sound CPR Trestle, which carries the Canadian Pacific Railway. After all that, the Seguin River reaches its mouth at Parry Sound.
The water that feeds the Seguin River comes from a large area. This area is called its drainage basin. Most of it is in the Parry Sound District. A small part of the basin is also in the Muskoka District.
River History
The Seguin River played an important role in the early days of the area. In 1857, a sawmill was built right where the river meets the bay. This sawmill was one of the first big businesses there. It helped lead to the founding of the town of Parry Sound.
The river was also used to transport logs. Workers would cut down trees in the forests upstream. Then, they would float the logs down the river to the sawmill.
A famous ice hockey player, Bobby Orr, grew up in Parry Sound. He learned to skate on the frozen Seguin River when he was a kid!
Nature Along the River
There's a special protected area along the river called the Seguin River Conservation Reserve. It covers about 275 hectares (680 acres). This reserve is located where the Manitouwabing River joins the Seguin River.
This area helps protect the natural environment. It has beautiful upland forests and steep cliffs. You can also see interesting metavolcanic rock formations sticking out of the ground. It's a great place to see nature!
